Borough Council to provide project management services for the redevelopment of the Chesil Beach Centre. Work has been undertaken with a wide range of partners to develop detailed proposals and prepare funding bids in
order that the Centre can be expanded and developed to provide improved facilities.
The Chesil Beach Centre is
located adjacent to the world famous Chesil Beach and is in a central location on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. In December 2008 the project received a Round 1 HLF pass for a grant request of £550,000. During
2009 and 2010 H&L has been working with colleagues and a wide range of stakeholders on developing the project, a key project
partner Dorset Wildlife Trust are now on board with the project and will operate the redeveloped Centre.
In August
2010 with all the required match funding secured a round 2 bid to HLF was submitted with the decision received in December
2010 that the bid was successful and a grant of £550,000 was awarded. Work is now underway to implement this £1.1m project
with opening planned for summer 2012 in time for the Olympics. H&L are contining to assist with the project.
The main contractors for the project, Morgan Sindall of Poole, commenced construction work on site in November 2011.
“Martin Cooke has been invaluable in managing the bidding process and fund raising
exercise for the proposed expansion of the Chesil Beach Visitor centre at Weymouth & Portland. As a result of Martin’s
persistence and expertise in submitting bids, he has raised over £1m for the project, including a £550,000 Heritage
Lottery grant, ensuring that the project can proceed. Without his involvement, this would not have been possible”.
